What causes dementia to occur?
Dementia is a loss of brain function that is caused by certain diseases or strokes. Some examples of these diseases are: Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, Parkinson’s
disease and Multiple sclerosis. It is still unknown why some people get dementia, while other people do not; research is being done to get more answers.
What can be expected from Alzheimer’s disease?
Everyone who gets dementia is different. For the people who seem to get the disease out of the blue, the stages typically go quicker for them. Individuals who develop dementia
slowly will also, typically, go through the stages of dementia slower. The stages of dementia are as follows: First, you are going to notice some difficulty in things like
language, memory and judgment. In the beginning it can be very hard to determine if the individual is suffering from dementia or if it is the normal memory loss that comes with
old age. Not everyone who has mild cognitive impairment is going to develop dementia.
As the symptoms worsen, you are going to notice the person’s memory affecting their daily lives and becoming much more obvious. They are most likely going to forget major
moments in their past, forget details about current events, confusing their speech; just to name a few.
People who have severe dementia are going to be unable to understand language, recognize people and places and lose the ability to do everyday things like eat or bath.
Incontinence and swallowing problems are fairly common during this stage.
